An eyebrow transplant moves follicles from the scalp into the brow area, for people whose brows are thin or absent. The causes vary: years of over-plucking, thinning with age, scarring that stops growth, medical conditions such as alopecia, or damage from burns and accidents.
The procedure itself takes a few hours. You stay awake, the area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and you feel no pain. Grafts are taken from the scalp, tiny incisions are made in the brow, and each hair is placed individually. Angle and direction are everything here — the work is to copy the natural pattern of a brow, not simply to fill it.
The first days
You go home the same day, and your brows look full immediately. That is not the final result — it is the grafts sitting in place before anything has settled.
The first 24 hours matter most. Do not touch the brows, do not get them wet, and sleep with your head raised on two pillows to limit swelling. Swelling peaks around day two or three and then subsides quickly.
You will see tiny red dots where each hair was placed, which form small scabs. Leave them alone. Picking them can pull a graft out with them. The donor area on the scalp feels sore but heals quickly, and most people need little more than ordinary painkillers.
For the first week avoid heavy exercise; for two weeks avoid swimming, saunas and steam rooms. Heat and sweat both work against new grafts. Keep direct sun off the brows and wear a hat outdoors.
Scabs, then shedding
Scabs begin to clear about a week to ten days after the procedure. Once they are gone the transplanted hairs start to shed — and this is the stage that unsettles people most.
It should not. The follicle stays exactly where it was placed; only the visible hair is released while the follicle rests and rebuilds its blood supply. Shedding is evidence the graft is behaving normally.
The timeline
- Weeks 1–2 — scabs form and clear, swelling settles
- Weeks 2–6 — transplanted hairs shed
- Months 2–3 — the quiet phase, when nothing appears to be happening
- Months 3–6 — first new growth, fine and lightly pigmented at first
- Months 9–12 — full thickness, final shape and density
Why it takes a full year
Follicles do not resynchronise after being moved, so they re-enter growth at different times. That staggering is why brows look uneven at month five and even at month nine, and why the honest assessment point is twelve months.
Caring for the brows while they heal
Follow the cleansing routine you are given rather than improvising. Keep the area protected from sun, heat and friction, and avoid make-up on the brows until your team clears you. Once healed, transplanted brow hair keeps the growth behaviour of its donor site, so it will need trimming every week or two.
Realistic expectations
A transplant restores shape and density; it does not produce a brow that needs no maintenance. Some patients need a small second session to refine density, which is normal rather than a sign of failure. If something concerns you — spreading redness, pain, or discharge — contact the clinic. The emotional part
The shedding phase is difficult precisely because brows sit in the middle of your face and you look at them every day. Knowing the sequence in advance is what makes it bearable. The patients who do best are the ones who stop inspecting the mirror daily and let the process run its course.
