A beard carries real aesthetic weight, and sparse or missing patches in the beard area can affect a man socially and psychologically. A beard transplant has made that a solvable problem: follicles taken from a chosen donor area are transferred into the beard or moustache, to fill patchy growth, shape the cheek and jaw line, or cover scars. The donor area is generally the nape of the neck, which carries no aesthetic importance of its own. Grafts are taken with micro tips and placed with fine sapphire tips or Choi implanter pens, so no incision or stitch scarring is left on the face.
How a beard and moustache transplant is performed
The method is decided first. Once the donor area holding thick, healthy follicles is identified, the planned number of grafts is collected, typically between 1,000 and 3,000 depending on the area being treated.
The recipient area is then designed carefully. The grafts are placed at the correct angle for the calibre of each follicle, either into channels opened with fine sapphire tips or directly with a Choi implanter pen. The same approach is used to thicken a moustache or to connect it to the beard, so that the two read as one natural growth pattern.
Why the angle decides a natural-looking beard
The structure of the channels is the single most important technical detail. Channels created at the right angle are what produce a natural appearance afterwards, and having them opened by an experienced specialist is a genuine advantage. Beard growth has its own direction, which is why we work at roughly 25 to 30 degrees rather than the steeper angles used on the scalp. Before your beard transplant
Choose an experienced specialist with references you can check. After the preliminary examination we discuss the method and how the process will run. Blood-thinning medications and supplements should be stopped on your doctor's instructions, usually at least a week beforehand, and smoking and alcohol, both of which work against healing, should be avoided.
Recovery after a beard transplant
Redness and scabbing on the face are temporary, and the scabbing is itself a sign that healing is underway: it sheds and the skin settles within 7 to 10 days. Protect the area during the first week, and rest through the first three days in particular to speed recovery. Avoid sport and strenuous exercise so the follicles are not disturbed.
As with scalp work, there is a shedding phase between weeks 2 and 4, known as shock loss. It is not a cause for concern: once that normal stage passes, the follicles begin to grow again healthily.
Caring for your new beard
Avoid personal care products that could irritate the beard area. Trim with scissors only at first, and wait three to four months before using a shaver. After that, the transplanted hair is permanent and can be shaved and trimmed like the rest of your beard. The first week matters most: follow your doctor's instructions closely, and sleep on your back for a period so the transplanted follicles are not disturbed while they settle.
From design to full growth
- Design. Cheek line, jaw line and density are mapped with you before extraction begins, because a beard design is a facial proportion decision.
- Extraction. Single-hair units are taken from the donor area at the nape under local anaesthesia.
- Implantation. Grafts are placed at low, beard-appropriate angles following the natural growth direction of each zone.
- Growth. Shedding in weeks 2 to 4, new beard hair from the third month, and the full result at around 12 months.
