Breast augmentation, often simply called a boob job, increases the size and improves the shape of the breasts with implants. The reasons people ask for it vary: breasts that never developed as hoped, volume lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, or a difference between the two sides. The operation is one of the most established in aesthetic surgery, and its success depends far more on planning than on the implant itself.

Planning the result
The best-looking augmentation is the one that fits your frame. At consultation we:
- measure the chest width and the breast tissue you already have, which set the range of implant sizes that will sit naturally;
- discuss the look you want, from a subtle fill to a fuller shape, and try sizers in a bra so you see the proportion on yourself;
- choose between round and anatomical (teardrop) silicone implants, and between placement under the muscle or over it, based on your tissue rather than on fashion;
- decide the incision, most often in the fold under the breast, where the scar is hidden when standing.
If your breasts have dropped as well as lost volume, an implant alone may not be enough and we will say so; a lift, with or without implants, is a different conversation.
How the procedure is performed
- Preparation. Blood tests and an anaesthetic review are completed before the day, and the surgeon marks the incision and pocket with you standing.
- The operation. Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon creates a pocket under the muscle or the gland, places the implant, checks symmetry, and closes in layers. It takes 1 to 2 hours.
- Recovery in the clinic. You stay 1 night. A support bra is fitted and worn day and night for the first weeks.
- Follow-up. The surgeon sees you before you fly home, usually after 5 to 7 days, and stays in contact as the implants settle.
Recovery and results
The chest feels tight and sore for the first days, and pain relief is planned for it. Most patients are back at a desk within a week and return to sport after 6 weeks. Implants sit high at first and settle into their final position over 2 to 3 months; the scar fades over 12 to 18 months. Modern silicone implants are not expected to need routine replacement on a fixed schedule, but they are not for life either, and we recommend periodic checks.
