Some fat simply does not move. The lower abdomen, the flanks, the inner thighs and the area under the chin are the classic places where a healthy weight and regular exercise still leave a pocket that spoils the outline. Liposuction removes those localised deposits through a few tiny incisions and reshapes the contour of the area, which is why it is described as body contouring rather than weight loss.

What liposuction can and cannot do
Liposuction gives its best results when three things are true: you are at a weight you can maintain, the fat is in a defined pocket, and the skin over it has reasonable elasticity so that it retracts as the volume is removed.
- It does: slim a specific area, improve the proportions between areas, and refine an outline that diet has not changed.
- It does not: replace weight loss, tighten loose skin, or remove cellulite.
Where the skin is loose, especially on the abdomen after pregnancy or weight loss, we will suggest a tummy tuck instead, or a combination of the two. For enlarged male breast tissue, liposuction is often the main part of male breast reduction.
Areas we treat
The abdomen and flanks, the back and bra line, the inner and outer thighs and knees, the upper arms, the chin and neck, and the male chest. Several areas are commonly combined in one session, within the safe limits on the total volume removed in a single operation.
How the procedure is performed
- Assessment and marking. We examine the areas standing and lying down, check skin quality, and mark the treatment zones with you in front of a mirror.
- Anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia with sedation for one or two small areas; general anaesthesia for larger or multiple areas.
- Tumescent infiltration. A solution containing local anaesthetic and a vasoconstrictor is infused into the fat, which reduces bleeding and bruising.
- Fat removal. Through incisions of a few millimetres, fine cannulas remove the fat evenly, sculpting rather than emptying the area. The procedure takes between 1 and 3 hours.
- Garment and recovery. A compression garment is fitted immediately and worn for 4 to 6 weeks. Small areas are usually a day case; larger ones may mean one night in the clinic.
Recovery and results
Expect bruising, swelling and a tight feeling for about a week, with pain relief planned for it. Light activity is encouraged from the first day; most patients return to desk work within a few days to a week and fly home after 5 to 7 days. Sport waits 3 to 4 weeks. The new contour shows once the early swelling has gone and keeps refining for 3 to 6 months as the skin settles over the new shape. The fat cells removed do not return, but weight gain can still change the result, so a stable weight protects it.
